Wonderful fly fishing getaway

My brother and our 96 year old mom just had a wonderful three day getaway to this lovely cottage. The cottage is eleganly furnished and perfectly located on a beautiful hillside at a bend in the river. The fishing is excellent for brook trout and we also caught a few rainbows. It's just a short walk from the cottage to the stream below, no need to drive. On thing we loved was the fireplace on the screen porch, which is a great touch for a cozy evening after a day of fishing. It's about 7 miles to the charming town ov Brevard, and close to the Davidson River and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Jim Sloan, the owner was very friendly and helpful. It was easy to book over the internet, a great experience that we highly recommend.

Easy access to trout stream even for someone near 80. Great view fro streamside deck/screened porch. Upscale appliances are a definite plus. Supply of cleaning supplies, towels, and dish/flatware much more than adequate. A very comfortable and enjoyable seven days.

Just What I Was Hoping For!

When we go on vacation, my primary goal, (other than finding a great location) is "will it feel like a vacation to ME, the Mommy/Wife", so I primarily search out homes that take me out of my little world and choose those with amenities that we don't have at our own home. The Riverside Cottage was another winner for our family, nestled within such a special locale! This is an intimate home, but felt very spacious for our family of four. We spent much of our time on that perfect, screened-in porch that faces the river. The view is truly very special, I can't even imagine how magical it must look when the leaves begin to change! During the evenings we had family time within the house; the upscale and comfy furnishing lending itself to that cozy, "forest-y" feel. My particularly favorite thing was being able to open the large kitchen windows and cook while having the best river view and river sounds I've experienced yet! Another plus was having the very quiet washer/dryer downstairs where the bedrooms were located, it was perfectly convenient. And yes, the heated flooring in the bathroom made us all realize that that's the next upgrade for our own bathrooms! The other reviews are correct. Jim, the owner, is friendly, sincere and quite helpful. We took his recommendation and went on the waterfall tour. It was the highlight of the week and unexpectedly reasonable, however--YOU do the driving as Craig, the very knowledgeable and amiable guide joins you in your car, so make sure you check your gas tank prior to the tour or let Craig know you need to make a stop before going too far. This tour also was a great way for my husband to learn the "lay of the land', which he enjoyed. Finally, we spent some time exploring in town, (good restaurants and fun tourist shopping), and pulling off the roadside here and there to trek through the river with our 9 and 13 year old daughters and take pictures. Make sure to pick up a local map (visitor center at the entrance into Brevard from the cabin), to get around the windy roads for finding all sorts of fun places to explore, and so you can get back to the cottage again! Thank you Jim and Cathy, we returned home refreshed and inspired by your special place and can't wait to try out your other two homes!

My wife and I recently spent a week at the Fishing Cottage. This trip was one of the best vacations we have had. The cabin exceeded all expectations; a great location, very comfortable and clean, well appointed, and quiet. We spent two days sightseeing in and around Brevard and three days mountain biking in Dupont. I highly recommend Sycamore Cycles in Brevard for all things bike related(including rentals), and also the trails in Dupont. In closing, we highly recommend Trout House falls and are looking forward to our next stay.

Our trip to the Brevard area was one of the most memorable vacations that our family has ever taken. The owners went well out of their way to make our stay amazing. From helping us coordinate our vacation activities ( Waterfall tour, Flyfishing the French Broad, Gem Mining and Kayaking were among the highlights), to providing resort inspiring ammenities and decor throughout this magnificiently appointed home with magestic views of the French Broad. Their attention to detail in very much appreciated. Oh - PS NIghtly Smores on the enclosed patio in the fireplace while sitting on a chaise lounge- how can it get any better than that. Thanks Guys for an amazing vacation The K Family

Great Get-Away!

Date of Stay: 06/27/12 Review Submitted: 07/02/12

We came to the cottage for a "get a way" and to rest and relax! And we sure did! The house and the well stocked house was so beautiful we felt so at home! We so much enjoyed the screened-in porch and sat out there most of our time just listening to and watching the stream. We saw deer, birds and ducks. It was unusually hot while we where visiting and we waded in the stream and enjoyed the cool water and looking at the water and the amazing rocks and forms of the slate and flow of water. The house was so amazing and so comfortable. It was so well stocked that all of the items we brought were not needed! The owners had thought of everything to make our stay comfortable! They were extremely gracious hosts. We could not have asked for better accommodations. The town of Brevard was quaint and offers a lot to anyone. The scenery of the mountains and all that it offers is so varied that it takes more time that we had to even begin to have to get but a flavor. We definately plan to make a return visit to this little bit of heaven on earth.

My husband and I spent a very relaxing long weekend here. The sound of the river was mesmerizing. We spent most of our time on the screened porch. Make sure to take groceries with you as it is a long drive to the grocery store. The closest place to eat is in Brevard which is about a thirty min. drive.

We thoroughly enjoyed the cabin, it was exactly as described and we had a fabulous time fishing right below on the river. Jim was very informative and checked on us just the right amount times. There were only a couple things that prevented our stay from being perfect: for the rate we paid we were surprised that the dinnerware was chipped and not in the greatest condition and secondly the fact we were only left 1 roll of toilet tissue! I feel that the second was just an oversight and not enough to actually call about, but the dinnerware definitely needs to be replaced. That said we still would go back and enjoy the cabin again.

I can only say this has been the most relaxing vacation and lovely nature renewing time of my life and my husbands. You should both feel so wonderful that you share this with outsiders... Ms Sloan your ambiance in this cabin is so superb. I have attached a photo of our dinner tonight with your table settings and wonderful linen napkins etc so you know how much we did enjoy. We have grilled out the entire time we have been here except for one night. I love to cook and your cabin has all the needs anyone could ask for regarding cooking. We went fly fishing today down by your other home. We met some really nice fly fishermen from South Carolina that gave us some tips and some worm lures the fish were biting today. unfortunately we didn't catch anything other than tree limbs and Bill caught his T shirt. But we had so much fun spent yesterday fly fishing on the Davidson river in the pisgah forest. Met a nice man that was celebrating his 66th birthday fishing with a big old smelly stogie in these lovely mountains. got over that and still had a great time. went to waterfalls too for three days. What a wonderful back to nature adventure !!! thank you so much for this lovely week.

Cabin was luxurious, spotless and up to date with top end appliances, a plethora of kitchen accessories, very comfortable beds and all the little special touches that you would find in your own home. While it is "river front", there is a road between the house and the river, however, it is not very busy and the sound of the rushing river could be heard as though you were right on the water! Fishing on the East Fork was easy and very productive, although crowded at times as the area in front of the cabin is clearly a popular spot to fish. Owner was awesome and accomodating to work with and worked to make sure our stay was perfect. Would definitely stay here again!

Peaceful is the best word to describe our stay at Riverfront Fishing Cottage. The porch, fireplace and sound of running water flowing across the rocks below, what more can you ask for. I had a hard time pulling myself away to visit the Dupont State Forest, which I’m so glad I did, the park is beautiful. Be prepared for walking a lot of walking, but it’s worth it. The cottage décor is perfect down to the silverware, and the bathroom, I have to say I never would have expected the detail, very nice. The directions are spot on, no wrong turns, and the location is perfect, solitude yet close to the attractions. Would I return, absolutely, Thank you!

This is a wonderful place to stay in the area near Brevard. Much thought and attention to detail is evident when you step inside the cottage, which is tastefully decorated and has a nicely applianced kitchen. The fishing theme is reflected throughout the home, but in a lovely upscale way, not at all cute, country or kitschy. The décor is stylish and comfortable; and the bathroom is what you would expect in a high-end home, not a weekend rental. The weather was beautiful during our stay and we practically lived on the deck and the screened porch...both great places for morning coffee and afternoon wine. The river is just across the road from the cottage and its sound was sweet music on the decks and porch. The road was closer than it appeared from the photos, but was not a problem as the traffic was minimal. There were many nice pools and riffles in the stream, but unfortunately the fish were too smart for us in August. Brevard is a short drive away and has good markets and restaurants. Jim and his wife are charming and quite helpful. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to my friends. This cottage is perfect for the more selective traveler.

Our family has just enjoyed a wonderful weekend at the Riverfront Cottage. Our children enjoyed fishing on the stream in front of the cabin. At night the sound of the river was wonderful as we relaxed on the screened porch and as we slept. We went on a tube ride down the French Broad River and enjoyed wonderful hotdogs and sundaes at Rocky's in Brevard. We had a fun trip to Pisgah forest, although it was a bit crowded on Saturday. All of these activities were wonderful, but we were always anxious to return to the serenity of the Riverfront Cottage.

It is also perfectly located for fly fishermen (and women) and whether you fish or not, the river provides a relaxing presence at all times. We look forward to staying here again in the future.

My three adult children and I thoroughly enjoyed staying in the Riverfront Cottage. The babbling brook across the street was beautiful to see and hear as we were relaxing on one of the three decks for coffee, lunch or just reading. We spent most of our time chasing waterfalls in the Mt Pisgah Forest close to Brevard and also in Rosman. We also spent time on the Blue Ridge Parkway enjoying the breathtaking views of the mountains. What a way to get out of the summer heat of Georgia, as it was at least 10 to 15 degrees cooler in the mountains.

I have been to brevard several times and stayed at very nice bed&breakfasts in town. They were very nice and yet the trout house still blew them away. It is very up to date and stylish with plenty of room. Everything was clean and we were surprised how nice the dishes/silverware was. It was like a home away from home. The house is close to a road but traffic is very seldom and it makes easy access for excursions. The east fork river is on the other side of the road (50ft from house) and the sound is relaxing and the fish were plentiful. Great time & bargain.

My husband and I had a marvelous, relaxing visit to the Riverfront Cabin. We loved the private and simply luxurious accommodations. If there was a "Cabin Beautiful" magazine, these properties would be on the cover. What a place to call home base amidst the sound of the river and migrating geese! My husband had a go of the fishing and was happy to release his catch, and enjoyed every relaxing minute! We had an invigorating hike in the nearby Dupont Forest and then filled our bellies with a giant burrito at Pescado's Burritos across from Brevard College...simply yummy!! All in all, a great beginning to fall 2010!

Sitting on the porch with the sound of the rushing river and the view of the water with the backdrop of the forest was so mesmerizing, it was hard to pull ourselves away. Yet we still managed to fly-fish, play golf, hike, search for waterfalls, shop and enjoy several amazing restaurants in the surrounding area. The cottage is beautifully appointed in delightful detail with everything you need for a pampered stay. Jim Sloan responded to our every request and always pointed us in the right direction. Our only disappointment was that it was too warm to use the fireplace on the porch ... a terrific reason to return during a cooler season.

My wife and two girls, 13 and 15, spent Spring Break at the River Cottage. We had a wonderful time at the cottage, on the east fork of the French Broad river, and in Brevard. Jim Sloan made the reservation process painless. The cottage itself is immaculate. It is very tastefully decorated and while not as secluded as his other properties it still offers great privacy. The highlight of my stay was the fact that the river was stocked on the second day of our stay. Between my two girls and me, we must have caught and released well over 60 or 70 brown trout, and that was just fishing one or two hours a day. The hiking and waterfalls in the area are great, Pisgah National Forest was wonderful, and Brevard has nice restaurants and a great gelato shop. This is our second stay at one of Jim's properties and won't be our last. It is probably a little more pricey than some of the other rental properties in the area, but his service, quality of the properties, and all of the nice personal touches make it well worth it.

We enjoyed a memorable Thanksgiving holiday and long weekend at this wonderful secluded cottage. The river was soothing music, the kitchen was very user friendly and the beds were very comfortable. The shower was also wonderful (great water pressure). Brevard was a short 15 minutes away when we wanted some shopping or eating out, but the best part was being so close to the river for fly fishing and enjoying such a cozy and well appointed cottage for a few days. Jim Sloan was a delightful person to work with when making reservations. We would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a cozy getaway with all the amenities you could want!

The cabin was very clean and well decorated. The beds were comfortable (tempur-pedic) and the shower was great. Although one can tell from the on-line photos, that this was a beautiful, well-decorated cabin, the photos don't do it justice. You have to experience this little slice of heaven to appreciate it. The decor along with the cliffside setting is so serene and peaceful and everywhere you glance there is another wonderful detail to amaze the senses. I could get used to being lulled to sleep by the sound of the river and the next morning enjoying the sight of a lone fisherman wading through the waters from my overhead screened in porch while I sip my coffee. Wow, it was hard to leave! The cabin was furnished and equipped with the best appliances. Very well-done and impressive. Thanks for sharing your cabin!!!!

My husband, my cousin, her husband and myself spent a wonderful 3 days in the fishing cottage! It was everything and more than I expected. The cottage is a perfect get away and very welcoming. Every thing we needed was there for us to use. You have a done a wonderful job in your decorating and giving your place such a warming effect. Will be back soon I hope!

You have a really nice place and we plan to return next summer. You offer all the comforts of home. The fishing was great. Caught browns and rainbows every day. It's a great location. Only 20 minutes to Brevard and maybe 25 to Pisgah National Forest(more fishing and hiking). Something for everyone.

My husband and I recently spent a truly idyllic week at the Riverfront Cottage. we were lulled to sleep by the murmur of the river. We awoke to the song of birds. We enjoyed watching the trout fishermen and we walked in the cool, clear water ourselves. The cottage is beautifully appointed and decorated...we had only to pick up our dinner each evening and then cook it on the great outdoor grill! We spent lazy mornings sipping coffee on the screened porch. We spent our days sightseeing in the area and enjoyed lunch at several of the terrific local restaurants. We attended a concert at the Brevard Music Center. We found that everything we wished to do or see was very accessible from the cottage, yet we had perfect privacy and our time was truly our own. It was as though we had our own special place in the mountains and we will certainly return. Our stay was peaceful, stressless and most relaxing. Do we recommend a stay in the Riverside Cottage? You bet we do!
